Designing naturally

Michael Pawlyn, TED

Mathematical design

Models turn up everywhere in nature. One of the best known is the golden ratio. After Euclid and Plato, countless others studied it — Kepler, Luca Pacioli, Roger Penrose and, not least, Leonardo of Pisa, known today as Fibonacci. Mark Barr gave the ratio the Greek letter Φ, the first letter of the name Phidias, the Greek sculptor who lived from 490 to 430 BC and is thought to have applied the golden ratio in his work. The Fibonacci sequence (1-1-2-3-5-8-13 and so on) can be observed in nature surprisingly often, as can the logarithmic spiral derived from it. Below is a film by CosmicContinuum with a great many examples:

Lightweight structures

Nature fits structure to function. Solid structures of the kind we know — an iron bar, say — do not exist in nature. Strength comes from the choice of material and from the shape. Spider silk is among the strongest materials in the world, and the skeleton of diatoms, organisms living as deep as two kilometres down, holds up against the pressure of the water. Thanks to 3D printing we can now imitate these forms ourselves, and need less material to do it.

Diatoms

Colour

Colour in nature is often set by the choice of material and by structure. The octopus is a fine example of how changing structure produces different colours. Bird feathers are much the same: most are black, grey or white in themselves, yet most birds have colourful plumage — again a matter of structure and of how light falls. Even a peacock's feathers are shades of black and grey.

Our approach

In designing and shaping we work with the design spiral combined with the Biologically Inspired Design (BID) model. Alongside that we use the DesignLens from Biomimicry 3.8 as a frame of reference. Besides bringing the methodology, we think along with you and provide the knowledge about possible biological solutions. We also put you in contact with the right scientist about the precise requirements for the design. And finally we test the outcome for you, to make certain the design meets the requirements set at the start.

Examples

We have been active at a range of companies for some years now. Solutions we have developed include:

  • Food industry: the production lines had reached maximum capacity. A small adjustment to the filling machine, using the shape of the kingfisher's beak, raised capacity by 15 to 20 per cent.
  • Logistics company: drivers' routes were reworked using ant routing. The saving came to 23 per cent of kilometres driven, which made an extra driver and vehicle unnecessary.
  • Packaging company: waste from packaging materials across the chain was reduced by taking organic materials (mycelium) into use.

Other services

Alongside consultancy we also offer masterclasses and programmes in the field of innovation:
